Spring: March to May
Spring is the season most travellers picture when they think of Bhutan. Rhododendron and magnolia come into flower along the road to Dochula Pass, daytime temperatures in Thimphu and Paro sit comfortably in the high teens, and the Tiger's Nest climb is pleasant rather than punishing.
April is the strongest single month. Mornings are usually clear enough for mountain views from Dochula, and the valleys are green without being wet. Paro Tshechu, the largest spring festival, falls in March or April depending on the lunar calendar — book several months ahead if you want to attend.
Monsoon: June to August
We are honest about this: monsoon is not the ideal time to visit Bhutan. Rain falls heavily, cloud sits low over the valleys for days, and landslides can close sections of the Thimphu and Punakha roads at short notice.
That said, it is not without appeal. Rates are at their lowest, the country is intensely green, and there are very few other visitors. If you are flexible about your schedule and not travelling for mountain views, it can work. We build extra buffer days into monsoon itineraries as a matter of course.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the best season for views. By late September the rain has cleared the air, and October and November regularly deliver the sharpest Himalayan visibility of the year. Days are crisp, nights are cold, and the harvest gives the valleys a golden colour.
This is also peak season. Thimphu Tshechu falls in September or October and fills hotels across the capital. If your dates are fixed around a festival, tell us as early as you can.
Winter: December to February
Winter is underrated. Skies are often flawlessly clear, the crowds have gone, and the lower valleys — Punakha in particular, which sits at a warmer altitude — are very comfortable during the day.
The trade-off is cold nights and the risk of snow closing higher passes, including the road towards Phobjikha Valley. Black-necked cranes winter in Phobjikha from late October to February, which is a genuine reason to come in this season.

What is the single best month to visit Bhutan?
October. It combines the clearest mountain views with comfortable daytime temperatures and dry roads. April is the strongest alternative if you would rather see the country in flower.
Is Bhutan cold?
It depends on altitude. Thimphu and Paro sit above 7,000 ft and are cold at night year round. Punakha and Phuentsholing are considerably warmer. Carry layers in every season.
Should I plan around a festival?
Only if it genuinely matters to you. Tshechu festivals are spectacular but hotels fill months in advance and prices rise. Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar, so confirm before booking flights.
