Why go to Darjeeling
Darjeeling is the easiest Himalayan trip to love. A UNESCO-listed steam railway still climbs the ridge, the tea gardens that made the town famous are open to visitors, and on a clear morning Kanchenjunga fills the northern sky.
The classic plan is a pre-dawn drive to Tiger Hill for sunrise, then Batasia Loop and the Ghum monastery on the way back, with the rest of the day around Chowrasta and the Mall. Add Mirik or Kurseong if you have the time.
Four or five nights is comfortable. It pairs naturally with Gangtok, and many travellers combine both in a single trip.

Practical notes before you book
Will I actually see Kanchenjunga?
It depends on the weather. October to December gives the best odds, often several clear mornings in a row. March to May is good but hazier. During monsoon the peak is frequently hidden for days. No agency can promise a clear sunrise, and anyone who does is guessing.
Is the toy train worth it?
Yes, but manage expectations. The full Darjeeling–NJP run takes around seven hours. Most travellers prefer the short joy ride between Darjeeling and Ghum, which takes about two hours and includes Batasia Loop. Steam services are limited, so book early.
Do I need a permit?
No. Darjeeling requires no permit for Indian nationals, which makes it one of the simplest Himalayan trips to arrange at short notice.
How cold does it get?
Winter mornings drop close to freezing and Tiger Hill before dawn is genuinely cold at any time of year. Carry a warm layer even in summer.
Can I combine Darjeeling and Gangtok?
Very commonly, and we recommend it. The drive between the two takes about four hours. A seven to eight night trip covers both comfortably without long days in the car.
