When to visit Sikkim: March to May for flowers, October to December for clear Kanchenjunga views. Month-by-month weather and road conditions.
Visit Sikkim in March to May for rhododendrons and open valleys, or October to December for the sharpest Kanchenjunga views. Avoid June to September — monsoon brings landslides that regularly close the North Sikkim road.

Spring: the flower season
From late March the rhododendron forests along the North Sikkim road come into colour, and by late April Yumthang Valley earns its name as the Valley of Flowers. Daytime temperatures in Gangtok are comfortable, and Tsomgo Lake has usually thawed.
This is the season we recommend most often for first-time visitors. The one caveat is that afternoon cloud builds quickly, so plan mountain viewpoints for early morning.
Monsoon: the season to avoid
Sikkim's hill roads are cut into steep, unstable slopes, and monsoon rain causes landslides every year. The road north to Lachung and Yumthang is the most affected and can close for days at a time.
We do run trips in this window, but only with honest expectations and flexible routing. If your dates fall in July or August, we will usually suggest keeping to Gangtok and the south rather than committing to North Sikkim.
Autumn and early winter: the clear season
October to December is when Kanchenjunga shows itself properly. The monsoon has washed the haze out of the air, and from Pelling or Tiger Hill you can see the full massif on most mornings.
Nights get genuinely cold, particularly in Lachung and at Tsomgo Lake, but the days are bright and the roads are dry. For photographers, this is the season.
Altitude and permits, in every season
North Sikkim, Nathula and the Silk Route all require an Inner Line Permit regardless of when you travel, and army clearance at Nathula and Gurudongmar depends on conditions on the day.
Altitude matters year round. Tsomgo sits at 12,400 ft and Gurudongmar close to 17,800 ft. Build a rest day into the start of any North Sikkim itinerary, and tell us in advance about heart or breathing conditions so we can pace the route sensibly.

Common questions
When does Yumthang Valley open?
Usually March to early December. Heavy snow can close the Lachung road at short notice in winter and early spring, and we will tell you honestly if conditions look poor before you travel.
Can I see snow in Sikkim?
Yes. Tsomgo Lake and Nathula hold snow from December through March, and Yumthang often has snow into April. For guaranteed snow, December to February is the safest window.
Is Sikkim suitable in monsoon?
Southern Sikkim and Gangtok remain manageable, but we do not recommend committing to North Sikkim between June and September because of landslide closures.
