When to Visit Dooars for Wildlife
Dooars forests are open October to mid-June and closed during monsoon. Best months for rhino, elephant and bison sightings at Jaldapara, Gorumara and Chapramari.
Visit the Dooars between October and April. West Bengal's forests close from mid-June to mid-September for the monsoon breeding season, and sightings are best from late October once the tall grass has been cut back.

Why the forests close
West Bengal closes its forest areas from roughly mid-June to mid-September. This is the monsoon breeding season, roads inside the parks become impassable, and the disturbance would do real harm.
Exact reopening dates shift slightly each year with the rain. We confirm the current dates before finalising any Dooars itinerary rather than assuming last year's calendar.
The best months for sightings
November to February is the strongest window. The weather is cool and dry, visibility through the forest is good, and the elephant grass — which can grow taller than a jeep — has usually been cut or burnt back.
March to May is hotter but often excellent, because animals concentrate around the remaining water. Early mornings are the answer in this period; by midday the forest goes quiet.
Choosing between the parks
Jaldapara is the one to prioritise for rhino. It holds one of India's larger one-horned rhino populations and the early morning elephant safari has a strong record.
Gorumara and Chapramari are smaller and quieter, with watchtowers overlooking salt licks and river beds — good for elephant, bison and deer. Buxa Tiger Reserve climbs into the hills towards the Bhutan border and is more about forest and landscape than guaranteed sightings.
Booking safaris
Elephant safari slots at Jaldapara are limited and released on a fixed schedule. They routinely sell out during holiday periods, so these need booking well in advance.
Jeep safaris are easier to arrange and run at more times of day. We handle permits and slot booking as part of your package, but the earlier you confirm dates, the better the slot we can secure.

Common questions
Will I definitely see a rhino?
No wild forest can guarantee a sighting. Jaldapara has a strong population and morning safaris have good odds, but we will always give you the honest picture rather than sell a certainty.
Is Dooars good for children?
Yes. Drives are short, there is no altitude, and the watchtowers give children something to look at without needing to sit still in a jeep for hours.
Can I combine Dooars with Bhutan?
It is the natural pairing. The road to Phuentsholing runs through the Dooars, so adding a wildlife section before crossing into Bhutan costs almost no extra driving.
