Why go to Dooars
The Dooars is the floodplain where the Himalaya finally flattens out into Bengal — a belt of sal forest, tea gardens and river beds running along the Bhutan foothills. It is the closest wilderness to our Jaigaon office, barely an hour away.
This is rhino, elephant and bison country. Jaldapara holds one of India's larger one-horned rhino populations, Chapramari and Gorumara offer quiet watchtower sightings, and Buxa Tiger Reserve climbs into the hills towards the old fort.
Four to six nights is plenty. It combines well with Bhutan, since the route to Phuentsholing passes straight through.

Practical notes before you book
When are the forests open?
West Bengal forest areas normally close from mid-June to mid-September for the monsoon breeding season. October to April is the reliable window, and sightings are usually best from late October onwards once the grass has been cut back.
Will I definitely see a rhino?
Nothing is guaranteed in a wild forest. That said, Jaldapara has a strong rhino population and morning elephant safaris have a good record. We will always tell you the honest odds rather than sell you a certainty.
What is the difference between jeep and elephant safari?
Elephant safaris run early morning only, carry few people, and get closer to grassland where rhino rest. Jeep safaris cover more ground and run at more times of day. Elephant safari slots are limited and need booking well ahead.
Is Dooars good for families?
Yes, and it is one of our easier trips. Drives are short, forest lodges are comfortable, and children usually enjoy the watchtowers. It suits older travellers too, since there is no altitude involved.
Can I combine Dooars with Bhutan?
It is the natural pairing. The road to Phuentsholing runs right through the Dooars, so a wildlife section before crossing into Bhutan adds very little extra driving.
