Why go to North East
The North East is the least crowded region we cover and the most varied. Meghalaya has living root bridges and the wettest villages on earth, Assam has the Brahmaputra and Kaziranga's rhinos, and Arunachal climbs to the high passes around Tawang.
Most first trips focus on Meghalaya and Assam: Shillong as a base, Cherrapunji for the waterfalls and root bridges, Dawki for the famously clear Umngot River, and Kaziranga for the wildlife.
Distances are long and roads are slow, so resist the urge to add everything. Six to eight nights covers Meghalaya and Assam properly. Arunachal and Tawang deserve a trip of their own.

Practical notes before you book
Do I need a permit for the North East?
Meghalaya and Assam need no permit for Indian nationals. Arunachal Pradesh requires an Inner Line Permit, which we arrange with your ID documents in advance. Nagaland and Mizoram also have their own requirements.
When should I visit Meghalaya?
October to April for comfortable travel. If you want the waterfalls at full force, come in late September or early October, just as the monsoon eases — the landscape is at its most dramatic, though some trails are slippery.
How hard is the root bridge trek?
The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat involves roughly 3,000 steps down and the same back up. It is genuinely demanding on the return climb. The single root bridge near Mawlynnong is far easier and suits most visitors.
Is Kaziranga worth adding?
If you have not seen a one-horned rhino, yes. Kaziranga holds the world's largest population and sightings on a morning safari are close to reliable. The park is generally open from November to April.
How long are the drives?
Longer than people expect. Guwahati to Shillong is about three hours, Shillong to Cherrapunji two, and Guwahati to Kaziranga around five. Tawang is a two-day drive from Guwahati. We build realistic days rather than cramming.
