Darjeeling in Every Season — A Complete Guide
When to visit Darjeeling: October to December for Kanchenjunga views, March to May for tea gardens and mild weather. Season-by-season guide.
Visit Darjeeling in October to December for the best chance of a clear Kanchenjunga sunrise, or March to May for mild weather and the first tea flush. Monsoon, June to September, hides the mountains for days at a time.
At a glance
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| March–May | First and second tea flush, mild days, some haze |
| June–September | Monsoon. Heavy rain, leeches on trails, mountains hidden |
| October–December | Best visibility of the year, cold mornings, peak season |
| January–February | Cold and quiet, occasional snow, very clear air |
The Kanchenjunga question
Almost everyone comes to Darjeeling hoping for one thing: a clear sunrise over Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill. It is worth being realistic about the odds.
From late October to December, several clear mornings in a row are common. In March to May the mountain appears often, but haze softens the view. During monsoon you may go a week without seeing it at all. No agency can promise a clear sunrise, and one that does is guessing.
Tea season
Darjeeling tea is harvested in flushes. The first flush, from late February to April, produces the light, floral teas the region is famous for. The second flush in May and June gives the fuller muscatel character that many drinkers prefer.
If a working estate visit matters to you, come between March and June, when the gardens are actively plucking and the factories are running.
The toy train
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still runs on its original two-foot gauge. The full journey from New Jalpaiguri takes around seven hours, which is more railway than most travellers want.
The practical choice is the joy ride between Darjeeling and Ghum, roughly two hours including Batasia Loop. Steam-hauled services are limited and sell out, particularly in October and November, so book well ahead.
What to pack, whatever the season
Darjeeling sits at about 6,700 ft and mornings are cold at any time of year. Tiger Hill before dawn is genuinely cold even in May.
Bring a warm layer, a waterproof if travelling anywhere near monsoon, and shoes with grip — the town is built on a steep ridge and the lanes are steep and often wet.

Common questions
Does it snow in Darjeeling?
Occasionally, in January and February, but it is not reliable. Snow settles more often at Sandakphu, which is higher, than in the town itself.
How many days do I need?
Four to five nights covers Darjeeling comfortably, including Tiger Hill, the toy train, a tea estate and a day for Mirik or Kurseong.
Do I need a permit for Darjeeling?
No permit is required for Indian nationals, which makes Darjeeling one of the easiest Himalayan trips to arrange at short notice.
